Overview

This page contains five different sample experiments to show you different kinds of things that can be done with E-Prime. The instructions below tell you how to download and install the experiments on your computer.

Instructions

1) Click on the link to download an archive

2) Save the archive on the desktop

3) Double-click on the archive, once it is saved

4) Place the files in: c:/My Experiments

5) Go to c:/My Experiments to look at the example (the program is the .es file, or the one that looks like three green blocks)

1. Number Stroop

• Word reading or counting as tasks
• Stimuli are a list of number words (e.g., two two two)
• Question: Do automatic processes interfere with controlled processes?

2. Perception

• Mental rotation of 2s and Rs with and without cueing
• Question: when people mentally rotate, do they imagine the places in between, or do they jump to the answer?

3. Short Term Memory

• Show strings of 3 letters, have people count back from a given number by 3s, then get recall test
• Question: measure how fast memories decay at different intervals when rehearsal is prevented

4. Visual attention

• Show varying number of letters on the screen, solid, white, gray fills, and the subjects task is to say whether a given letter of a given type is on the screen or not
• Question: do certain features "popout" so that it doesn't matter how many distractors there are on the screen?

5. SemanticPriming

• Do a lexical decision task on two words on the screen
• Question: does the semantic relationships between the words speed up the lexical decision?

Summary of easy to implement experiments in E-Prime

• You can present any kind of visual stimulus (words, letters, pictures); any sequence of such items; control frequency and delays
• You can study perception, attention, memory, learning, reading, and some kinds of problem solving using E-Prime
• One minor restriction is that the computers in the lab do not have sound cards and so you won't be able to run experiments involving sound
