E-Studio tutorial worksheet

Please work in pairs, and hand in just one worksheet.

Names: __________________________   and _______________________________

A.    Get out the "E-studio getting started" guidebook that you copied from the library.

B.    Create your first experiment in E-studio by following all the steps in the guidebook.

When you are done, answer the following questions:

  1. What items in the toolbox did you use while creating this experiment?

Textdisplay, List, FeedbackDisplay  (Procedure objects could have been

dragged from toolbox, but in this tutorial were created from the list

            object.

  1. What are three ways in which you use the textdisplay object?

Can pick any three of: Instructions, Goodbye screen, Target, Fixation,

            Stimulus

  1. What are three ways in which you used the list object?

Can pick any three of: specify blocks of trials, specify conditions,

            specify correct answers, specify stimulus

  1. How is the ordering of steps in a procedure object specified?

By placement on the timeline (things to the left are first)

  1. What happens when you name a procedure in a list object but haven't created that procedure yet?

A dialog box appears asking whether you would like to create the

            procedure.

  1. Is the target object part of the session, block, or trial level?

            Trial level

  1. How many trials are there in the experiment that you just created?

Eight trials (1 for each condition)

  1. How many different conditions (combinations of levels that were manipulated across trials) were there in the experiment you just created, and what were they?

Eight conditions: male-positive-male, male-positive-female, male-negative-male,

            male-negative-female, female -positive-male, female -positive-female,

            female -negative-male, female -negative-female

  1. Suppose you wanted to have 2 fixations (one before the prime and one after the prime). How would you add the second fixation to the experiment?

Drag textdisplay object from toolbox onto the trialproc timeline and put

it to the left of the Prime object. Then edit the properties pages to specify

the details (+ in the middle, duration, how terminated, etc).

  1. Suppose you wanted to have a subject go through all the conditions in a fixed order (rather than a random order). How would you make that change?

Click on the properties icon in the TrialList window. Then select

"Sequential" from the list under "Order".

  1. What information was given as feedback to each trial?

Correct/Incorrect, response time, and mean accuracy thus far  .

  1. Why do you need to generate a script before running the program?

So that you can translate your experiment into a language that the

            computer (and specifically E-Run) understands.
