Go over DV/IV, hypothesis, operational definition (25 min)

DV = dependent variable = thing that you measure

IV = independent variable = thing that you manipulate

Hypothesis

Theoretical definition = what theoretical construct is being measured or manipulated

Operational definition  = what exactly (in concrete terms) is being measured or manipulated

Discuss concepts above abstractly

Do Color Stroop Demo

            Make transparency

            Color words with pen.

Make some congruent (name=color)

and some incongruent (name mismatches color)

Have students do task twice aloud

First time, name ink color of words aloud as fast as they can

Second time, read words (ignore ink color)

Fill-out design worksheet for this experiment

Independent variables (and levels)

            Task: Color name, word reading

            Condition: Congruent, Incongruent, Control

Design = 2 x 3 factorial, within subject

Dependent variables:

            Reaction time

Errors

Then assign Design Worksheet for Blair & Banaji, Experiment 1 only
